The Eldridge Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) has formally requested that the City of Eldridge support a long-term funding and operational plan to ensure the continued delivery of local fire and emergency medical services while preserving the department’s independent organizational structure.
At its June 2, 2026, business meeting, the membership of the Eldridge Volunteer Fire Department voted unanimously to remain an independent organization following an extensive review of operational needs, staffing realities, and long-term sustainability. The department has since submitted a funding proposal to City leadership outlining the resources necessary to maintain emergency response capabilities, recruit and retain volunteers, replace aging equipment, and ensure continued service to the community.
“Our firefighters believe maintaining an independent department is the best path forward for preserving the level of service Eldridge residents expect and deserve,” said Andrew Doyle of the Eldridge Volunteer Fire Department. “This proposal is about ensuring that emergency services remain strong, sustainable, and capable of meeting the community’s needs well into the future.”
According to department leadership, the proposal focuses on four primary areas:
• Staffing and operational support
• Facility improvements that support volunteer recruitment and retention
• Replacement of aging apparatus and emergency equipment
• Long-term financial stability and capital planning
The department’s membership expressed concern that significant organizational changes could result in the loss of experienced volunteers at a time when volunteer recruitment remains a challenge for fire departments across Iowa and the nation. Firefighters believe preserving the current independent structure offers the most practical and cost-effective approach to maintaining service continuity while minimizing disruption to emergency response operations.
“Volunteer firefighters dedicate thousands of hours each year to protecting this community,” Doyle said. “Retaining that experience and commitment is critical. Once volunteers leave, those years of training, local knowledge, and service cannot be replaced overnight.”
Department officials note that uncertainty regarding future funding and organizational structure creates challenges for long-term planning, volunteer retention, equipment replacement, and staffing needs. They emphasize that the discussion is not about expanding services but about sustaining the level of protection currently expected by residents, businesses, schools, and visitors throughout the community.
The Eldridge Volunteer Fire Department has requested a response from City leadership by July 15, 2026, regarding support for the proposed funding plan and continuation of the independent operating model. Department leaders say a timely decision will allow both organizations to plan effectively and avoid disruptions to emergency services.

“The firefighters of this department have dedicated countless hours serving this community,” Doyle added. “We are prepared to continue that commitment. The question now is whether the City is prepared to make the investments necessary to support the level of service Eldridge residents expect.”
