The City of Ottumwa will conduct a prescribed burn at Memorial Park on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, beginning at approximately 9:00 a.m., weather permitting.

This controlled burn is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve a 9.5-acre oak savannah restoration located in the northern section of the park. The restoration project, initiated in 2016, is part of a broader water quality improvement initiative supported by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the State Revolving Fund.

Prescribed burns play an important role in managing oak savannah ecosystems. Fire helps promote the growth of native plant species while reducing the spread of invasive and woody vegetation that can hinder natural habitat development.

The scheduled burn is dependent on suitable weather conditions and may be postponed or rescheduled if conditions are not favorable. Notification signs will be placed around Memorial Park on the day of the burn to inform the public.

Residents and visitors should be aware that smoke from the burn may temporarily affect visibility in and around nearby roadways. The public is encouraged to use caution while traveling in the area and to limit outdoor activities if smoke is present.

For updates or additional information, residents are encouraged to monitor official City of Ottumwa communications.
