Hunter education is a required program designed to give students the skills and knowledge needed for safe and responsible participation in outdoor activities. The course covers essential topics such as basic survival and first aid, water safety, wildlife identification, and the fundamentals of wildlife management. It also includes instruction on hunting laws, as well as firearm and archery safety, while emphasizing personal responsibility and ethical behavior in the outdoors.
Under Iowa law, anyone born after January 1, 1972 must complete a certified hunter education course before they can purchase a hunting license in the state.
When registering a child for the course, it’s important to create or log in to an account using the child’s information, not the parent’s, unless the parent is also taking the course. Students who have previously purchased Iowa Department of Natural Resources licenses, such as youth deer tags, will already have an account and should use that existing information to register.
