An Ottumwa man faces numerous charges after he forced his way into his mother’s home and assaulted her, according to the Ottumwa Police Department.

20-year-old Jaishaun Byrd was charged with the following:

  • First-degree burglary (Class B felony)
  • Assault committed by a person against whom a protective order is issued (Class D felony)

  • Interference with Official Acts (Simple Misdemeanor)

On February 13th around 9:00 PM, court records say Byrd arrived at his mother’s residence on Plum Street in Ottumwa. The mother had a no-contact order against Byrd that was issued in January. After departing, police say Byrd returned but was locked out.

According to court documents, the victim tried to barricade the door but Byrd kicked the door in and subsequently assaulted his mother by throwing a table at her and hitting her. Police noted she had multiple bruises on both arms and a laceration on her leg. Byrd is accused of threatening to kill the victim several times during the alleged assault.

On the same night, Ottumwa police found Byrd on the 1200 block of 4th Street at approximately 9:27 PM, according to the criminal complaint. Byrd allegedly failed to respond to officers’ orders and attempted to flee on foot. Police say Byrd was intoxicated and later admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages.

Byrd was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. His bond has been set at $32,900.
