The Fairfield Public Library will host a new five-week program this March designed to help parents of young children build essential early literacy skills through everyday activities and family fun.

The Raising Readers program, a collaboration between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Jefferson County and the Fairfield Public Library, targets families with children ages 3-6. Sessions begin Thursday, March 5, and will run weekly from 5:00-6:30 PM at the library.

“We know parents with children this age often wonder how to get their children on a path to be successful in school and become a good reader,” says Courtney Burkhalter, County Director with Jefferson County Extension. “We are excited to share this program because it helps busy parents discover simple ways to help turn everyday routines and experiences into learning opportunities for reading and writing skills.”

The program combines structured learning with hands-on activities. Each session begins with video lessons for parents, followed by twelve interactive activities that families complete together. According to Burkhalter, the approach resonates with both children and parents. “The kids really love coming to the sessions because they play games and spend time with their parents, while parents are learning and practicing easy techniques to help their children become successful readers and writers,” she explains.

To make participation easier for busy families, a meal will be provided at the end of each session, with funding support from the Fairfield Kiwanis.

The entire five-week series costs just $5 per family. Parents interested in registering can contact Sara Martindale, Children’s Services Specialist, at smartindale@fairfield.lib.ia.us or call 641-472-6551.
