Ag land specialist: Some farmland sales still setting records despite uneven market

An ag land specialist says farmland market conditions have been a mixed bag to start the year.

Thomas Schutter with Farmers National Company says fewer acres came to the market in January.

“For supply it’s been a little quiet the last month and a half. We’re picking up going into the spring. I think it’s really sporadic as far as values go, just depends on where you’re at.”

He tells Brownfield values have slightly increased in some parts of the Midwest.

“Especially in those areas where you see a lot of cattle. There’s still heavy demand for that good ground in good areas.”

Schutter says some individual land sales are still setting record values.

“We see less in that middle range and we see more of these drastic swings both ways. It’s interesting. It keeps us on our toes.”
