Deputies responded to a reported disturbance at a local bar after an altercation turned violent. What began as a confrontation between patrons quickly escalated, leaving one person seriously injured and multiple others involved.
On January 23 at approximately 9:40 p.m., the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the Two Cycles Bar in Moulton in response to an assault.
According to court documents, before deputies arrived, Jessica Jakubsin, 45, of Moulton allegedly struck a male patron over the head with a wooden object approximately 12 inches in length. The criminal complaint states the victim suffered a laceration to the top of his head, lost consciousness twice prior to deputies’ arrival, and experienced loss of vision in his right eye.
When questioned by law enforcement, Jakubsin reportedly told officers she believed the male patron had stolen her phone. Authorities say a second witness attempted to intervene and break up the fight, but Jakubsin allegedly threw the witness outside and began assaulting him as well.
Court filings indicate Jakubsin had been advised multiple times throughout the night to leave the bar due to her belligerent behavior and apparent intoxication, but she refused. Deputies noted an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Jakubsin. She was also informed by both the bartender and the owner that she was barred from the establishment. From the doorway, Jakubsin allegedly threw a pool stick at the bartender, who was behind the bar.
Jakubsin left the bar and was later apprehended in the 200 block of East 7th Street. Deputies say she was detained as part of the assault investigation and began resisting arrest. Court records state Jakubsin struck three deputies during the altercation, broke one deputy’s holster, damaged a portion of an officer’s radio, and scratched another deputy’s hand, causing it to bleed.
Jakubsin is currently being held in the Appanoose County Jail on the following charges: assault with intent to inflict serious injury (aggravated misdemeanor); two counts of assault on persons in certain occupations causing bodily injury (Class D felonies); three counts of assault on persons in certain occupations (aggravated misdemeanors); criminal mischief (simple misdemeanor); assault causing bodily injury (simple misdemeanor); disorderly conduct involving fighting or violent behavior (simple misdemeanor); and public intoxication (simple misdemeanor).
A preliminary hearing has been waived. An initial appearance hearing is currently on hold pending indictment.
