The Fairfield wrestling teams traveled to Fort Madison on Thursday night, January 15th, with both the girls and boys squads falling in conference dual competition. The girls lost 54-18 while the boys dropped a 56-20 decision.
Girls Wrestling: Fort Madison 54, Fairfield 18
Fairfield managed just three victories on the night.
June Connor delivered the Trojans’ strongest performance at 105 pounds, pinning her opponent in the second period at 2:49 after building an 11-3 lead. Sam Lyons earned a forfeit victory at 170 pounds, while Kendra Allison also received a forfeit at 235 pounds.
The rest of the night proved challenging for the Trojans. Bekah Zirkle fell to Fort Madison’s Eloise Lamb by fall in just 27 seconds at 110 pounds. Kensley Fligg lost to Briena Fenton by first-period fall at 1:01 at 120 pounds.
Reyna Gonzalez-Jimenez made her season debut at 190 pounds but fell to Mady Emmett by fall in 49 seconds of the first period.
Fort Madison picked up forfeit wins at 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, and 155 pounds, accounting for 36 of their 54 points.
The loss dropped Fairfield to 1-2 in conference dual competition.
Boys Wrestling: Fort Madison 56, Fairfield 20
The Fairfield boys team entered Thursday’s dual already reeling from a tough Tuesday performance where they fell to Albia 47-36, Oskaloosa 67-5, and Ottumwa 52-30. Unfortunately, the struggles continued at Fort Madison.
Fairfield Victories
Noah Patel opened the dual with a strong first-period fall over Adan Oronia at 1:27 at 106 pounds.
Jasper Carpenter dominated at 132 pounds, building a 13-3 lead before pinning Easton Richers in the third period at 4:20.
River Fulton delivered what may have been the match of the night at 144 pounds, winning a back-and-forth battle by decision 20-17 over Liam McEntee.
Dain Burkhart closed out Fairfield’s wins with a technical fall at 175 pounds, defeating Clifford Stewart 17-2 at the end of the second period at 4:00.
Fort Madison Dominance
The Bloodhounds controlled the majority of the dual. Quinn Settles suffered a quick 17-second first-period fall to Zane Houtz at 113 pounds. Kohda Higdon lost a competitive 10-5 decision to Justice Lightfoot at 120 pounds.
Hayden Bowman fell by technical fall 18-1 in the second period at 2:52 to James Fuller at 126 pounds. Ezekiel Moore lost by first-period fall at 1:45 to Oliver Schelich at 138 pounds.
Dusty Haynes dropped a first-period fall at 1:04 to Ryker Peters at 150 pounds, while Aiden Holthus lost by first-period fall at 1:28 to Peter Seyb at 157 pounds.
Calvin McClain was involved in one of the night’s wildest matches at 165 pounds. McClain held a commanding 25-18 lead but ultimately fell by third-period fall at 5:10 to Jack Benner.
Alex Hudson lost by fall in 56 seconds to Rainer Johnson at 190 pounds, and Sebastian Ftwi fell in 36 seconds to Ren Watson at 215 pounds. Fairfield did not have a wrestler at 285 pounds, conceding those points by forfeit.
Looking Ahead
The loss marked the boys team’s first conference defeat of the season, dropping their conference record to 2-1. Both teams will look to bounce back from Thursday’s setbacks as the season progresses and the postseason approaches.
