The Fairfield Police Department has established a memorial in honor of Chief David Thomas, recognizing his more than 30 years of dedicated service to law enforcement and emergency response.
On Friday morning, a memorial squad truck was placed in front of the Jefferson County Law Center. The vehicle, which was used by Chief Thomas during his time on duty with the Fairfield Police Department, will remain on display for the next several days as a tribute to his career and service to the community.
Members of the public who wish to pay their respects are welcome to visit the memorial. Individuals may park in the Jefferson County Law Center parking lot and walk to the memorial area. Items of tribute or remembrance may be placed on or around the memorial squad truck. The department asks that visitors be respectful of Chief Thomas, his family, and the local law enforcement community as they grieve the loss of a colleague, friend, mentor, father, grandfather, sibling, son, and “brother in blue.”
Chief Thomas’ career in public service spanned more than three decades. Before entering law enforcement, he served as an Advanced EMT with Davis County EMS and was a member of the Wapello County Rural Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the Ottumwa Police Department in April of 1995, marking the beginning of his law enforcement career.
During his time with the Ottumwa Police Department, Thomas was recognized for lifesaving actions and was awarded the Medal of Valor. In July of 1999, he joined the Fairfield Police Department, where he continued to advance through the ranks, serving as a Sergeant, K-9 Handler, Lieutenant, Captain, and ultimately Chief of Police. He was promoted to Chief in 2014. Throughout much of his career, Thomas was also a member of the department’s Special Response Team (SRT).
Visitation will begin after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20th, at Cranston Family Funeral Home in Fairfield, with family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services honoring Chief Thomas’ life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center. Cremation will follow the service.
The Fairfield Police Department expressed gratitude for the continued support shown by the community and said the memorial serves as a place for reflection and remembrance as the community honors the legacy of Chief David Thomas.
