On January 9, 1961, a familiar sight galloped into the hearts of Iowa’s children: Marshal J, riding his trusty golden Palomino. With a warm invitation to join him in his tack room for an hour of cartoons and cowboy antics, he quickly became a beloved figure in afternoon television. His show, the Marshall J. Show, aired for seven years, delighting audiences before he took his talents west to California.

A Cowboy’s Journey

Born in St. Louis, Alexander “Jay” Kotkis Jr. had a storied life. After enrolling at St. Louis University, he served in the Army during World War II, surviving the harrowing Battle of the Bulge with the 66th Division aboard the SS Leopoldville. Post-war, Jay briefly played for the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals and dabbled in rodeo before venturing into show business.

Making his way to Cedar Rapids, he initially found work in sports broadcasting at KPIG Radio. However, when the station changed formats, Jay pivoted to television as new stations emerged in the area: KCRI (later KCRG) and WMT. It was here that he transformed into the charming cowboy, Marshal J, complete with his loyal Dalmatian sidekick, Rowdy.

A Lasting Impact

Known for his genuine, homespun charm, Marshal J captivated children of all ages with his rope tricks and captivating stories from his rodeo days. His show was more than just entertainment; it taught young viewers about animal care, camping, firearm safety, and, of course, included plenty of cartoons.

As his popularity soared, Marshal J received an opportunity to move west when a station in San Francisco offered him a new home. Though his time on Iowa’s airwaves was relatively short, the impact he had on the lives of countless children is immeasurable.

Today, Marshal J is fondly remembered by Iowans, a nostalgic reminder of simpler times filled with laughter, learning, and the spirit of the Wild West. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he entertained and inspired.
