In a troubling turn of events, Helping Hands Food Pantry is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand as many local families find themselves struggling without SNAP benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown.
On Monday, the pantry reported serving five times its usual number of clients, with 16 first-time visitors seeking assistance. Many of these individuals cited the recent cuts to their SNAP benefits as the reason for their visit. Pat Finan, a representative from Helping Hands, expressed concern over the rising need for food assistance in the community.
“This year has been particularly challenging,” said Finan. “With cuts to multiple food assistance programs, we are unable to meet the growing needs of our community. Many of those we serve are hardworking families and retirees who are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.”
The pantry operates three days a week, providing essential food supplies to clients who can receive assistance twice a month. However, this year, Helping Hands has faced significant limitations in food availability due to restrictions from the Food Bank of Iowa, compounding the challenges they already face.
To address the urgent need for assistance, Helping Hands is calling on the community for support. The pantry emphasizes that monetary donations are the most effective way to help, as they can leverage funds to acquire food at lower costs than regular consumers can at grocery stores.
In addition to financial contributions, Helping Hands welcomes physical food donations, particularly requesting items such as cereal and canned fruits and vegetables. Volunteers are also needed to help with food distribution and organization at the pantry.
