A south central Iowa man was arrested in connection to the shooting death of an individual in Appanoose County on Tuesday night.

51-year-old Robert Barrell has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to 15440 470th Street in rural Mystic at 10:32 PM on reports of multiple people that were shot. The Appanoose County Sheriff’s office says deputies found 62-year-old Randy Walker and his son, 36-year-old Destry Walker suffering from injuries.

Randy was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines where his current condition is unknown. Destry died at the scene.

After launching an investigation, law enforcement was alerted to a motorcycle crash and an altercation on the 18000 block of 176th Street. Barrell was found hiding in the weeds close to the wreck, officials say.

Authorities say Barrell was taken into custody without incident and charged based on information from the scene of the shooting and motorcycle crash.

Barrell is currently in the Appanoose County Jail and is being held without bond pending a hearing with a magistrate judge.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office.
