Ottumwa police responded to a report involving the unauthorized use of a credit card, leading to an investigation.

On March 30 at approximately 7:35 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a report of unauthorized use of a credit card.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim’s sister contacted police to report that her sister’s credit card had been used at the Fine Liquor and Tobacco store located at 821 Albia Road. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the sister, who stated that a male—later identified as David Horvath, 56, of Ottumwa—left the scene on a bicycle. The store cashier also reported knowing the individual only by the nickname “Peanut.”

Court documents indicate that officers were already familiar with Horvath and had observed him riding a bicycle on Richmond Avenue around the same time. The cashier provided a receipt showing that Horvath used the card to purchase two packs of Montego cigarettes, totaling $10.28 before tax.

The case file states that Horvath used the victim’s credit card without authorization. Officers later located Horvath as he was fleeing the area and found him in possession of the purchased items, as well as the victim’s credit card.

Horvath was taken into custody and booked into the Wapello County Jail on a $2,000 cash/surety bond. He has waived his preliminary hearing and is charged with unauthorized use of a credit card under $1,500, an aggravated misdemeanor.
