Iowa is investing in its future workforce, announcing $250,000 in grant funding for the 2026 Summer Youth Internship Program. The funding will support nine projects across the state, creating internship opportunities for nearly 200 young Iowans in high-demand career fields.

The program is designed to connect youth with real-world work experience in industries that need workers the most—helping both students and employers build for the future. Internships will be offered in fields like healthcare, information technology, advanced manufacturing, and skilled trades.

State leaders say the initiative is about more than just summer jobs—it’s about building career pathways. Iowa Workforce Development Executive Director Beth Townsend said the wide range of programs reflects a strong commitment to preparing the next generation for meaningful careers.

“These programs represent a variety of industries and communities, all focused on helping young people gain valuable experience and move toward long-term success in the workforce,” Townsend said.

The grants will also prioritize youth who may face barriers to employment, offering them opportunities to gain skills, earn wages, and explore career options. Funding can be used for participant pay, training resources, program materials, and administrative costs.

The nine organizations receiving funding include:

  • Central Campus / Des Moines Independent Community School District (Des Moines) – $35,400
  • Collins Asset Management Corp., doing business as DroneXperts (Elkader) – $30,500
  • Geater Machining and Manufacturing (Independence) – $38,000
  • Genesis Youth Foundation (Des Moines) – $18,000
  • Homes of Oakridge Human Services, Inc., doing business as Oakridge Neighborhood Services (Des Moines) – $30,000
  • Innovate 120, Inc. (Maquoketa) – $24,600
  • Kline Electric, Inc., doing business as Team Kline (Des Moines) – $26,000
  • Ringgold County Hospital (Mount Ayr) – $26,500
  • St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital (Carroll) – $21,000

Officials say the program not only helps young people gain experience but also strengthens Iowa’s workforce pipeline by connecting employers with future talent.
