A new community walking program aimed at improving health and mobility will be offered in Fairfield this spring.

The Fairfield Public Library and Jefferson County Extension are partnering to host Walk With Ease, an evidence-based program developed and endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation. The program will be held at the Fairfield Public Library on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m., beginning April 13th and continuing through May 22nd.

Organizers say the program is designed to help individuals manage arthritis symptoms, while also offering broader health benefits for the community.

Arthritis remains the number one cause of disability in the United States, affecting nearly 60 million men, women, and children nationwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 26 million Americans with arthritis are unable to carry out everyday activities. The condition can make it harder for people to work, keep up with household chores, manage personal care, and take part in social activities and hobbies. Even walking can become painful or difficult.

Walk With Ease is intended to address some of those challenges. The program has been shown to reduce pain and limitations associated with arthritis, while also helping participants build a regular walking routine.

Health officials and medical professionals have long recognized the benefits of walking. In addition to helping people with arthritis, walking has also been shown to support those managing diabetes, heart disease, weight concerns, and other chronic conditions. Organizers say the program can also improve social connectedness within communities by bringing people together around a shared health goal.

Participation is open to any adult who can stand for at least 10 minutes without increased pain. Organizers note that individuals do not need to have arthritis in order to take part.

There is no cost to participate. Each participant will receive a free book and will also have the opportunity to receive free produce during the program.

Those interested in signing up can register online or call the Jefferson County Extension Office at 641-472-4166 for more information.
