Rylee Philips, a multi-sport athlete from Van Buren County, has committed to Iowa Western Community College, where she will compete in both track and cross country — joining one of the most decorated junior college programs in the country.
The Iowa Western women’s track and field program recently three-peated as the 2026 NJCAA Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field National Champions, marking the program’s fifth indoor national title since 2021.
Philips drew interest from Iowa Western’s coaching staff through a combination of athletic ability and the competitive mentality the program looks for in recruits. Marc Bierbaum, director of cross country and track at Iowa Western and the program’s distance coach, said he is excited to bring Philips into the fold.
“I am excited to have Rylee here,” Bierbaum said. “She is a dedicated runner. I like that she wrestled as well. I know a couple of runners that wrestled, and they were all tough competitors. I want someone that wants to compete, and Rylee has that edge, I believe.”
Philips has been a standout distance runner for Van Buren County, competing in track and cross country throughout her high school career. She also competed in wrestling, joining the women’s wrestling team when it was added to the school’s athletic offerings — an experience she has credited with helping her step outside her comfort zone, develop new skills, and build connections with teammates she otherwise may not have met.
Philips was recently recognized through the Beck’s Player with Heart Program, which honors Iowa high school athletes who demonstrate commitment and passion both in competition and in their communities. The program recognizes students who reflect dedication on and off the field.
After her time with the Reivers, Philips plans to transfer to the University of Iowa, where she intends to major in finance and minor in either accounting or marketing.
