A proposed tax break in the Iowa Senate would benefit veterinarians who are Iowa high school graduates and choose to practice in the state.
Jennifer Dorman with the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association says the tax break targets veterinarians receiving federal student loan assistance who are working in USDA-designated shortage areas.
“It’s meaningful to the veterinarians that are going out in rural Iowa,” Dorman said. “They’re having to pay income tax on their repayment award.”
Jake Swanson with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association says rural Iowa is facing a significant shortage of veterinarians.
“We certainly want to do everything we can to kind of grow that workforce,” Swanson said, “and this bill goes a long way to accomplish that goal.”
A Senate subcommittee advanced the tax break on Tuesday.
