The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam targeting elderly individuals involving callers posing as family members in distress.
According to the sheriff’s office, multiple reports have been received about scammers claiming a grandchild is in trouble. In some cases, the caller allows the victim to briefly speak with someone they believe is their grandchild before another individual gets on the phone, identifying themselves as an attorney.
The scammers typically claim the grandchild has been involved in an accident or is facing charges, such as operating while intoxicated. They then pressure victims to provide credit card information immediately, saying it is needed to keep the grandchild out of jail.
Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and not provide any personal or financial information over the phone.
The sheriff’s office emphasizes that anyone receiving this type of call should hang up immediately and verify the situation by contacting family members directly or reaching out to local law enforcement.
