A Newton man is free on bond after being arrested over the weekend on multiple charges, including a felony drug offense, following a domestic altercation. Court records indicate 41-year-old Matthew Alan McNeer was released from the Jasper County Jail Monday on a $10,000 bond, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday, March 23rd.
Newton Police arrested McNeer Saturday at his East 2nd Street South residence after he allegedly assaulted a woman and injured a responding officer. According to the criminal complaint, McNeer struck the woman in the back of the head and arm, leaving bruises and causing her to fall face-first to the ground. He reportedly also kicked her in the leg.
Officers noted that McNeer had an odor of alcohol and appeared unsteady at the time of his arrest. The complaint states he injured an officer while resisting arrest, which required police to take him to the ground. The officer sustained pain and red marks on both knees. During a search, police say they found a plastic bag containing 1.3 grams of methamphetamine and a vape pen with liquid that field-tested positive for marijuana.
McNeer is facing a class D felony for third-offense possession of a controlled substance. Additional charges include aggravated misdemeanors for first-degree harassment, assault on a person in certain occupations, and third-offense possession of marijuana. He is also charged with serious misdemeanors for first-offense domestic assault with injury and interference with official acts causing injury, as well as a simple misdemeanor for public intoxication.
