LV was born on November 14, 1939, in Sterling, Illinois, to Vernon and Helen Hersh. He graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1957 and moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he built a long career grounded in hard work and loyalty. He joined the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) in 1960, worked pipeline construction for many years, and later served as a Business Agent and Business Manager with
IUOE Local 234 before retiring in 2002.
He shared a beautiful life with his wife Joann of 66 years, whom he adored. He is survived by his wife Joann; his sons, Marty (the late Carol) and Greg (Connie); his grandchildren, Carrie Rollmann (Chris), Daniel Lara (Arlene), Brent Blakely (Heather), Quentin Blakely, and Shelby Atwood (Austin); and his great-grandchildren, Maddie and Harry Rollmann, Emma Lara, Deklan Blakely, Beckett, Brooks, and
Micah Atwood.
LV loved traveling the country in their motorhome, making friends wherever he went, spending time with family, golfing, and fishing. He often said his favorite place was simply “wherever I am right now.” He found joy in simple things—garage gatherings, a good fire, his famous Bloody Marys, and golfing at the Walton Club, where he’d often say, “Ain’t this living.” Known for his one of a kind “mumbly” voice,
his sense of humor, and his ability to laugh. He never took life too seriously and could make anyone laugh.
Len passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Helen Hersh, and his daughter-in-law, Carol Hersh.
We like to think he’s found his new favorite place—up in heaven’s garage, with a great view and that familiar grin.
As were LV’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service and burial will be held at a later date. Friends and family are welcome to gather from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Walton Club in Fairfield to share memories and celebrate LV’s life. The family respectfully request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to Shriners Children’s Hospital and may be mailed c/o Cranston Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 189, Fairfield, IA 52556.
