High Fire Risk Expected Friday and Saturday, Officials Urge No Burning

Fire officials are urging caution across much of Iowa as dangerous fire weather conditions are expected to develop Friday and continue into Saturday.

Breezy winds, very dry air, and already dried-out vegetation are creating an environment where fires can start easily and spread quickly. On Friday, northwest winds will increase through the afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph in some areas. Humidity levels are expected to drop into the 20–25% range, especially across southwest to west-central Iowa—conditions that significantly raise the risk of fire.

Saturday is expected to be even more concerning. Stronger southwest winds could gust as high as 40 mph, while humidity levels fall even lower, near 15%. Combined with warmer temperatures and dry fuels, these conditions will make it very easy for fires to ignite and rapidly get out of control.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday, covering parts of central and southern Iowa. This means critical fire conditions are likely, and a Red Flag Warning could be issued if conditions worsen.

Officials strongly advise against any outdoor burning during this time. Even small sparks—from debris burning, machinery, or discarded cigarettes—could quickly turn into fast-moving fires under these conditions.
