Ernst: Farmers need solutions on input costs, not short-term aid

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst says lawmakers still have a lot of work ahead on the farm bill.

“We have a great product coming out of the House. We will make our own changes hopefully here in the Senate.”

The Iowa Republican says the legislation needs to boost support for farmers and ranchers, but…

“What I hate to hear is talk of additional just straight out aid to farmers without really addressing the underlying issues of input costs for our farmers and developing new markets.”

Ernst says farm bill provisions need to create long-term solutions.

“We’ve got a couple of senators are saying we should throw more money at the farmers and hopefully they’ll make it for another year.”

She adds she would support a federal year-round E15 solution as part of a so-called “skinny” farm bill.
