Blank Park Zoo Cancels Popular Wild Lights Event Due to International Visa Delays

The annual Wild Lights lantern festival at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines has been canceled this spring, removing one of the zoo’s most popular seasonal attractions. The event is known for its glowing, larger-than-life lantern displays that transform the zoo into a colorful nighttime experience for visitors of all ages.

Organizers say the cancellation is due to international visa issues affecting the artists responsible for creating and installing the lanterns. These artists typically travel from overseas and play a critical role in designing and assembling the massive illuminated displays. Without their arrival, the zoo cannot properly set up or maintain the intricate installations that define the festival.

The lantern displays are not simple decorations—they are large-scale, handcrafted art pieces, some towering more than 20 feet tall. Each year’s event features around 50 unique displays, including animals, mythical creatures, and themed light installations, all built by skilled teams with specialized expertise. Their absence makes it impossible to recreate the experience that visitors expect.

The cancellation is a setback for both the zoo and the community. The festival usually draws large crowds, generating important seasonal revenue and bringing increased foot traffic to the zoo during the spring. Families and returning visitors who look forward to the event each year will now have to miss out on one of the zoo’s signature experiences.
