A head-on collision near the Cardinal Community School District on Thursday resulted in a teen being airlifted to Iowa City with serious injuries, according to the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred on Ashland Road, a gravel roadway adjacent to the school district, at approximately 3:50 PM. The accident report states a 2004 Chevy Silverado was traveling eastbound and a 2012 Ford Escape was traveling westbound.

After the vehicles collided head on, the airbags of both vehicles deployed. The driver of the Silverado, 36-year-old Christopher Rullman, told deputies it was difficult to see vehicles due to dust on the road, according to the report. Rullman reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a 15-year-old female, sustained serious injuries and had to be extracted from the car. She was later taken to the University of Iowa Hospital via helicopter. Her status is unknown. The accident report says there was a passenger in the Escape who was not injured in the crash.

The sheriff’s office says each of the vehicles were totaled in the accident and both drivers were wearing seat belts. Rullman was later cited for not having a valid driver’s license, failure to provide proof of financial liability, and a registry violation.
