Coach’s Comments

“I thought we played one of our better games on Thursday,” said Van Buren County head coach Randy Smith. “Our defense was good and again we had multiple girls in double figures. We have beat Columbus twice so we know we can beat them but we sure can’t overlook them. If we win on Saturday, then we will concentrate on Iowa City Regina. We have had a really good year and want to continue playing at our best this time of year.”

Looking Ahead: Regional Rematch

The Warriors (14-7) will host Columbus (10-10) for the third time this season on Saturday, February 14th, in a Class 2A Region 8 contest. Van Buren County defeated Columbus 47-41 at Columbus on January 19th before Thursday’s 25-point victory.

The Warriors have no games scheduled between the February 5th Shootout and the February 14th regional matchup, meaning they’ll face Columbus in back-to-back games.

If Van Buren County advances, they would travel to face #10-ranked Iowa City Regina (15-4). Also on their side of the bracket are conference opponents Danville (13-5) and West Burlington (11-9).

The top half of the bracket features #8 Grundy Center (17-2) facing the winner of South Hardin (8-10) and Union Community (5-12), along with Hudson (12-5) and Jesup (12-7).

The Warriors finished their regular season with a 14-7 overall record and a 9-5 conference mark, placing fourth in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
