Steve Hunt, 71, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, February 8, 2026, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born on November 16, 1954, in Oskaloosa, the son of Chelsea Hunt and Shirley Ann Cameron Hunt (Boomershine). From the age of 5 on, he was raised by his stepfather (dad) Gerald Boomershine. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1973. Following high school, he attended University of Northern Iowa and later William Penn. Early on he worked at Easter’s Grocery Store in Oskaloosa. He then moved to New York and completed bartending school. He returned to Oskaloosa and worked as a bar tender at Stonehenge Supper Club, The Locker, Bucks, and the American Legion. He moved to Des Moines for a few years and worked at Brown’s Shoes and Heilig-Meyers Furniture Company. Last he returned to Oskaloosa and worked at APAC as a supervisor. He obtained a State of Iowa Nurse Aide Certification and went to work as a cook and caregiver at Country Life, retiring from there when the facility was closed. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. He was a talented dancer in his youth. He enjoyed tending to his flower garden, entertaining at his home, visiting on the telephone, and family gatherings. He also loved his pets, especially his pet parakeet.
His family includes his three siblings, Lorrie (Benny) Edgington of Oskaloosa, James Hunt of Oskaloosa, and Melissa Boomershine of Burlington; his stepfather (dad), Gerald Boomershine of Oskaloosa; nieces and nephews, Ben Edgington, Nikki Edgington, Amy Bean, Jesse Hunt, Jamie Rauch, Jake Rauch and Chad Bracy; many great nieces and nephews; his uncle and aunt, Danny and Connie Boomershine; uncle, Mike Cameron and aunt Pat Cameron; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, a brother, Gary Boomershine, and a stepsister, Connie Rauch, and a very special adopted aunt, Mabel Card.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Joseph Phung officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday, February 16, 2026 after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 p.m. Monday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
