Jefferson County has secured federal funding for a major road improvement project on 110th Street from Packwood Road to Birch Avenue near Pekin Community Schools, according to Jefferson County Engineer DeWayne Heintz and Supervisor Lee Dimmitt.
The project, which has been in development for approximately three years, has been awarded federal funding as part of a Community Development earmark championed by U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks. The county applied for $3,040,000 in federal funds for the project.
In addition to the federal earmark, the project has been awarded a $222,986 Traffic Safety Improvements Program (TSIP) grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation. The remaining balance of the estimated $3.8 million total project cost will be covered by Jefferson County’s Farm to Market funds.
The improvement project will include an asphalt overlay on 110th Street, enhancing the roadway surface and improving safety for motorists traveling the route.
Heintz credited Representative Miller-Meeks’ staff along with State Senator Adrian Dickey as being instrumental in securing the awarded funds. “Representative Miller-Meeks has championed this project as one of her Community Development earmark projects. Her staff along with Senator Adrian Dickey were key in getting awarded these funds,” Heintz stated.
The 110th Street project will utilize the same type of funding package structure currently being used for the Libertyville Road Rehabilitation project. While the grant has been officially awarded, Heintz noted the county may need to be patient as the formalization process for federal awards can take time. Supervisor Lee Dimmitt thought this project could possibly start by next Spring, however, that is not confirmed.
“Even though the grant is official, we may have to be patient as it takes a while for awards to get formalized,” Heintz explained. He indicated he will provide updates as more information becomes available.
