Jefferson County Health Center is inviting the community to celebrate American Heart Month with its annual Heart, Health & Home Cooking event on Thursday, February 26th, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Conference Room C at JCHC. The free educational event will focus on stroke awareness, heart health, and practical lifestyle changes that support long-term wellness.

The evening will feature an educational presentation on stroke prevention and recognition, helping participants understand what a stroke is, why quick action is critical, and how to identify warning signs using the F.A.S.T. method (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911). Attendees will also learn about common stroke risk factors and how everyday habits influence heart health.

Participants will receive guidance on key areas for improving cardiovascular wellness, including healthy eating habits, physical activity, quality sleep, and managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.

The event includes several hands-on activities designed to make healthy choices more practical and accessible. A guided “grocery store tour” experience will teach attendees how to read nutrition labels, select heart-healthy foods, and make simple substitutions when shopping.

The evening will conclude with food sampling and a live cooking demonstration featuring flavorful, heart-healthy recipes that can be easily prepared at home.

Attendees will have opportunities to ask questions, enjoy complimentary food samples, and receive on-site blood pressure checks as part of their heart health experience.

Colette Banda, Registered Dietitian at JCHC, emphasized the event’s practical approach to wellness. “Valentine’s Day is about caring for the people you love, and heart health is one of the most meaningful ways to do that,” Banda said. “This event is about progress—not perfection—and empowering people with simple, sustainable steps that support a healthier heart.”

Space is limited, and advance registration is encouraged. To reserve a spot, visit https://www.jeffersoncountyhealthcenter.org/heart-health-event or call 641-469-4203.

The event is sponsored by the JCHC Auxiliary, whose support helps make community health education programs possible.

The Heart, Health & Home Cooking event offers an accessible entry point for anyone looking to improve their cardiovascular health through evidence-based practices and enjoyable, heart-healthy cooking strategies.
