A Centerville man is facing multiple charges following an alleged domestic assault and violation of a no-contact order that left a victim hospitalized late last year.

On December 27 at approximately 9:00 a.m., Centerville Police responded to Mercy Hospital to speak with a victim regarding an alleged violation of a no-contact order.

According to law enforcement, officers were dispatched to the hospital after the victim sought medical treatment for injuries reportedly caused by Gideon Vangalder, 26, of Centerville. Officers observed that the victim had a bloodshot eye, which she stated was the result of being head-butted. Law enforcement also documented visible marks consistent with a taser being used on the victim.

The victim further reported that Vangalder began strangling her, impeding her ability to breathe. Criminal reports indicate that Vangalder violated an active protection order by going to the victim’s residence, where the assault allegedly occurred, prompting the victim to seek medical attention.

A warrant for Vangalder’s arrest was served by the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Department on February 2. He was transported to the Appanoose County Jail and later released. A no-contact order was reissued on January 27.

Vangalder is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault – Impeding the Flow of Air or Blood, an aggravated misdemeanor, and Violation of a No-Contact/Protective Order – Contempt, a simple misdemeanor. His initial court appearance is scheduled for March 28.
