Wisconsin lawmakers are considering legislation that would make sure more real dairy butter can be served in more schools.
Chad Zuleger with the Dairy Business Association says Wisconsin lawmakers are considering legislation that would require schools to offer butter in their meal programs. “A young boy came home and told his mother that there’s no more butter and they’re giving us margarine. The issues was raised, and sure enough, as we found out, people are looking at cheaper alternatives and everybody is looking to save a buck where they can and public schools are no different.”
Zuleger says they support the bill, which would make butter the primary product and allow margarine for students with dietary restrictions or food allergies.
On the national level, Zuleger says having President Trump sign the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act is huge for the health of children and the dairy industry. “I think with the new dietary guidelines and the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act being signed, we’re going to have a resurgence in dairy and people are going to come back to dairy.”
Zuleger spoke to Brownfield during the Dairy Strong conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
