A vehicle crash in Ottumwa ended with an arrest after officers located a suspect who allegedly fled the scene and was later found in possession of illegal substances.
On January 24 at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a reported vehicle accident on North Market Street.
According to a criminal complaint, Mason McNeely, 22, of Ottumwa, had stolen a vehicle from another jurisdiction and drove it into and through Ottumwa. McNeely reportedly crashed the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
Officers located McNeely nearby and issued lawful commands for him to stop. He was taken into custody and transported to the Wapello County Jail.
During a search at the jail, authorities located a syringe containing a white powdery substance inside McNeely’s sweatshirt. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine using a Nartec brand field test.
McNeely is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. A preliminary hearing has been waived.
McNeely faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor; and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.
