The Ottumwa Police Department acted on reports concerning the welfare of two dogs, resulting in a search that exposed shocking evidence of neglect by their owners
On December 18, the Ottumwa Police Department received information regarding the welfare of two dogs at the above location. The dogs were owned by Stephanie Haut, 35, and Jason Haut, 45. The dogs included a black and brown German Shepherd named Native, and a black and white Brittany Spaniel named Delilah.
Upon executing a search warrant, officers discovered the German Shepherd in poor condition, showing significant signs of emaciation. The dog’s ribs, hips, and vertebrae were visibly protruding through its long fur. A licensed veterinarian assessed the German Shepherd and rated its condition at 1 out of 9 on the body condition scale, indicating severe malnutrition.
Tragically, the Brittany Spaniel was found deceased, having been dead for approximately 12 hours. The Spaniel also exhibited extreme emaciation, with its bone structure clearly visible. The veterinarian determined that the overall cause of death was malnourishment.
Both defendants were arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. A bond of $3,000 has been set for each of them. Stephanie and Jason Haut are facing charges of animal neglect resulting in serious injury or death, classified as an aggravated misdemeanor, as well as animal neglect causing injury, a serious misdemeanor.
