Mike Blaess, born on October 26, 1944, in Decorah, Iowa, passed away on January 22, 2026.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and was a dad to many including, Tina, Eric, Kirk, and Doug. Mike was known for his unwavering commitment to his family, a value that shaped his life and touched all who knew him.

He was a proud Vietnam Vet, having bravely served his country in the Army. Mike was also a hardworking individual who spent his career in transportation as a truck driver before his retirement. In his leisure time, Mike was an avid golfer and managed to get his entire family swinging clubs on the green. He was also fond of playing computer games, a hobby that kept him connected to the younger generations. Mike and Missy cherished time spent playing games with close friends, Patty and Olga (Bobby). Fishing with his great-grandchildren was a pastime he cherished, as was organizing family game nights that brought everyone together with laughter and camaraderie. A man of few words, he showed his love through simple gestures and the familiar comfort of his touch.”

He is survived by his wife Gloria “Missy” Blaess; children, Tammy Blaess, Melissa Higgins; grandchildren, Sydney, Michael, Coral, Erin, Dylan (Rhiannon), Elizabeth, Kat, Josh, Darian, Megan, and Dakota; several great grandchildren, including Nick and Liam; siblings, Sandy (Nate) Thorson, Judy (Jim) Zweibohmer, Beverly Blaess. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Blaess and Opal Ellerman; one son, David Meetze; two brothers, Bobby Blaess and Donnie Blaess; two nephews, Caleb Thorson and Danny Blaess. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026 from 12-4 p.m. at Eric & Amy Thorsons.

For those wishing to attend and needing the address, please message Eric or Amy directly. Inurnment with military honors for close family will take place at 9:30 a.m., Monday, February 2, 2026 in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr, Adel, IA 50003.
