Joel Smith has been appointed Interim Chief of Police for the Fairfield Police Department following the recent passing of Chief David Thomas. The appointment comes as the department continues to mourn the loss of their longtime leader while maintaining their commitment to serving the community.
In a statement to the community, Interim Chief Smith expressed both his honor at serving in the role and his commitment to continuity during this difficult transition period.
“In the wake of a difficult and unexpected loss within our department, I am honored to be serving as Interim Chief of Police for the Fairfield Police Department,” Smith stated. “During this interim period, my priority is to provide continuity and stability for both our department and the community we serve. Our officers and staff remain committed to serving Fairfield with integrity, honor, and professionalism.”
Smith emphasized the resilience and dedication of the Fairfield Police Department personnel during this challenging time.

The appointment follows the death of Chief David Thomas, who served the Fairfield Police Department for more than 30 years and held the position of Chief since 2014.
