A northwest Iowa farmer says he had a favorable 2025 crop year despite the presence of southern rust and tar spot in his area.

Nathan Anderson tells Brownfield, “Scouting corn in the late season and making decisions about disease management in corn late in the season, we saw that pay off again this year.”

He says his family utilized research from Iowa State University to make their management decisions.

“About side dressing and y-dropping some corn to maximize yield and return to investment of those nutrient dollars in a low-margin year.”

Anderson says the amount of southern rust pressure in his county was surprising.

“You could find it nearly everywhere somewhat variety dependent and situationally dependent, but it was definitely prevalent in the county. You could also find tar spot as well as a number of other corn diseases too.”

Anderson raises row crops and operates a cow-calf herd in Cherokee County.
