The Fairfield Community School District has announced there will be no school on Monday, February 2nd, as the district mourns the loss of Emmelia Miller, a beloved student.

In a statement to families, the district shared its grief, saying, “Our school community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our beloved students, Emmelia Miller. Words feel inadequate to express the grief many of us are experiencing.” The district added that the decision to cancel classes was made out of respect for the needs of students, staff, and families as they grieve and support one another.

According to Emmelia’s obituary, a time to gather with family and friends to share memories will be held on Sunday, February 1st, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center. A church service honoring and celebrating her life will take place on Monday, February 2nd, beginning at 11:00 a.m., also at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center, with Pastor Jason Christensen officiating.

The family respectfully asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be directed to the Emmelia Miller Memorial. Contributions may be mailed c/o Cranston Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 189, Fairfield, IA 52556. Friends and community members may also leave online condolences or join the webcast at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

To make up for the missed instructional day, the district announced that Friday, April 3rd, will be added as a student attendance day, with a reminder to be sent at a later time.
