An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for western, central, and southern Iowa from midnight tonight through noon Friday, as dangerously cold wind chills are expected to drop between 30 and 35 degrees below zero.
Forecasters warn that these life-threatening conditions could return again Friday night into Saturday morning, prompting an Extreme Cold Watch from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.
Wind chills this severe can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their pets.
If you must go outside, dress in multiple layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible. Check frequently on older family members, friends, and neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable to the cold.
When using portable heaters, be sure they are operated safely. Never use generators or grills indoors, as this can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide exposure.
Stay informed, limit time outdoors, and take this extreme cold seriously as conditions across the region remain hazardous.
