An early morning fire on Sunday, January 25th, caused significant damage to The Broken Spoke and Alley Bowl in Osceola, a bowling facility owned by Clarke bowling coach Jeff Giza. While no injuries were reported due to the fire occurring during the overnight hours, much of the bowling team’s athletic equipment was destroyed in the blaze.
The fire comes at a critical point in the season for Clarke’s bowling programs. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams have demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the year, with the girls’ team preparing to compete at the District competition next week.
School officials expressed their support for Coach Giza and his family during this difficult time, while also committing to assist both bowling teams as they navigate this setback. The school is currently coordinating with Coach Giza and Coach Wisniewski to develop a support plan for the athletes.
State officials are working to identify an alternate location for the upcoming district bowling competition. The school will provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the new venue.
Several adjustments have been made to the bowling team’s schedule:
- Senior Night will proceed as planned within the team on Sunday evening, with additional details to be shared through the BAND communication platform
- Bowling seniors will be recognized during the home basketball game on February 3rd
- Sunday’s meet against Creston has been canceled
- Thursday’s meet in Mt. Ayr remains on the schedule at this time
Despite these challenges, school administrators expressed confidence in both teams’ ability to continue representing Clarke with distinction. The community’s thoughts and well-wishes are with Coach Giza, his family, and all affected athletes during this recovery period.
