Court records show a Centerville man is facing several assault and misdemeanor charges following an incident that began with a burglary call and ended with his arrest and detention at the Appanoose County Jail.
On January 1 at approximately 10:18 p.m., the Centerville Police Department was dispatched to the 200 block of East State Street for a report of a burglary in progress.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with William Greene, 39, of Centerville. According to the criminal complaint, Greene immediately approached a Centerville police cruiser while yelling and acting belligerently, then punched the driver’s side window of the patrol vehicle.
Court documents state Greene then approached a witness’s truck and kicked the driver’s side door, causing a dent. Estimated damage to the vehicle was $300 or less.
Greene fled the scene on foot, running south through the alley behind Owl Pharmacy. While attempting to evade officers, Greene pushed a dumpster into the path of a patrol vehicle and then punched the front passenger-side window of the cruiser.
Before being taken into custody, officers noted Greene had a strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage coming from his person and continued to act belligerently. While seated in the back of the patrol car, Greene allegedly spit in an officer’s face, requiring officers to place a spit mask over his head.
Greene was transported to the Appanoose County Jail, where he remains in custody. He later waived his preliminary hearing.
Greene is charged with three counts of assault on persons in certain occupations (aggravated assault), criminal mischief in the fifth degree (simple misdemeanor), public intoxication (simple misdemeanor), and assault — placing another in fear of contact (simple misdemeanor).
