2025 a difficult year for many farming families

An eastern Iowa farmer says he’s concerned about the direction of the U.S. ag economy.

“I think if you’re not concerned then you’re not paying attention,” said Dave Walton. “It’s not pretty.”

Walton raises corn and soybeans near Wilton along the Mississippi River. He tells Brownfield that 2025 has been difficult for many farming families.

“(Commodity) prices are down. We’re starting to get fertilizer prices and they are continuing to rise. The margin squeeze is getting worse than it has been in a while.”

Walton says producers should closely monitor their balance sheets as they start to make decisions for the 2026 crop year.

“Not a lot to be excited about, but you do the best you can, try to cut expenses where you can, and just keep moving forward I guess.”

Walton says farmers could benefit from a boost in agricultural trade.
