The Fairfield girls tennis team delivered an outstanding performance at the Tulip City Tussle in Pella on Saturday, August 23rd, capturing 3rd place overall in a field loaded with top-tier competition.
Competing against 16 teams with 7 ranked in the top 10 for Class 1A, the Trojans showcased their depth and competitive spirit throughout a long day of tennis that provided exactly the kind of high-level experience Coach Dunkin was seeking.
Poojita Mukadam led the charge for Fairfield, earning a stellar 3rd place finish in the singles bracket with a 4-1 record. Her tournament began with an electrifying 3-set victory over Ava Breems of Pella Christian, winning 4-2, 1-4, 9-7 in a match that demonstrated her mental toughness and ability to close out tight contests.
Mukadam followed that with dominant straight-set victories over Davis County’s Ella Schooley (4-0, 4-0) and Clarinda’s Chandy Nothwehr (4-0, 4-1), showcasing her consistency and control. Her only loss came against the eventual singles champion of the tournament, Camryn Glass of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, in straight sets (4-1, 4-2). However, she bounced back with another gutsy 3-set win over Davis County’s Culee Smith, prevailing (4-1, 3-4(3), 7-4) to attain 3rd place, that comes with a medal and a tulip.
Natalie Steele also had a competitive showing, finishing 10th in singles with a 4-2 record. She opened with a convincing win over Oskaloosa’s Loghan Edgar (4-2, 4-1) and notched victories over Spencer’s Abbey Crew in 3 sets (3-4(3), 4-0, 7-2), Pella JV’s Sierra Leathers (4-0, 4-0), and Pella’s Ellie Smock (4-1, 4-1). Her losses came in a hard-fought 3-setter against Clarinda’s Layla Hargis (4-3(4), 1-4, 8-6) and a straight-set defeat to Pella Christian’s Ava Breems (4-1, 4-2) in a battle for 9th place. Steele earned herself a medal with her placement as well.
The doubles teams faced stiff competition throughout the day, with both pairings gaining valuable experience against top-level opponents.
Ria Ross and Sriya Yammanur finished 8th in doubles with a 2-3 record, starting strong with victories over Pella JV’s Rachael DeJong & Aubrey Rozenboom (4-1, 4-0) and Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Maddie Grote & Kaeley Abels (4-1, 4-2). They battled competitively in their losses, falling to Pella’s Addison Van Wyk & Reagan DeJong in straight tiebreaker sets (4-3(3), 4-3(3)), Spencer’s Kate Elser & Jill Kabrick (4-2, 4-2), and Clarinda’s Taylin Walter & Ellie Cole in a 3-set thriller (3-4(1), 4-3(2), 7-3).
Mareyn Dunkin and Faeven Gebremariam placed 13th in doubles with a 2-2 record, highlighted by 2 exciting 3-set victories. They opened with a dramatic win over Decorah’s Addison Maki & Myla Leitz (1-4, 4-1, 1-0(2)) and closed with another 3-set triumph against Clear Lake’s Paityn Enke & Ashley Roberts (3-4(1), 4-0, 1-0(3)). Their losses came against Spencer’s Brynn Merchant & Kennedy Graettinger (4-1, 4-0) and Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Stella Britton & Carley Rooney (4-3(0), 4-0).
Coach Dunkin was pleased with the team’s performance and the tournament experience: “Just a great day of tennis. We all got at least 4 matches today. A lot of great talent and competition and we all got better. Which was our goal. Come home healthy and get better.”
The coach’s satisfaction with achieving the team’s primary objectives – staying healthy while improving through high-level competition – speaks to the tournament’s success from a developmental standpoint.
