The Jefferson County Historic Preservation Commission (JCHPC) has launched a community-wide fundraising campaign to restore the historic Bonnifield Log House/Cabin, the oldest two-story log home in Iowa and a rare surviving symbol of the state’s pioneer spirit.
Located in Old Settlers Park/Waterworks Park in Fairfield, the Bonnifield Log House stands as a testament to early settlement in Jefferson County. The commission’s goal is to raise $325,000 by September 30, 2026 to complete the restoration project.
“Our mission is to preserve and restore this rare piece of local history so future generations can experience the roots of Jefferson County firsthand,” said Joan Salts, Chairperson of the Commission. “With community support, we believe we can bring the Bonnifield Log House back to life.”
As part of the campaign, donors may purchase personalized bricks to be inscribed in honor of individuals, families, businesses, veterans, or memorials. These bricks will be permanently placed at the restored site, with several sizes and inscription options available.
