What began as the creative vision of Connie Murray, Meal Site Manager at the Milestones Community Café in Ottumwa, has grown into one of the most anticipated events for older adults in the area: the Milestones Senior Prom. Now in its third year, this joyful, themed celebration was created to bring something fresh and meaningful to the community—while changing perceptions of what Milestones and senior services can be.

Connie wanted to do something that would not only bring joy but also draw new people into the café and give longtime participants something to look forward to. “I just wanted to do something totally different—something fun that could grow into a tradition,” she said. Unsure how to bring it all together, Connie turned to café regular Kathy Wilbrenner, who quickly got excited and offered to help with crafting and décor. They agreed each year would feature a new theme, voted on by participants. The first prom transported attendees to Paris, followed by a sunny Hawaiian Luau. This year, it’s an elegant Masquerade.

Another participant, Dan Brinegar, known for his carpentry skills, was also eager to help. “I love building things, and this gives me something to be part of,” he shared. “Before this, I’d just be sitting at home. Now I get to do what I enjoy and watch my friends have fun.”

With no initial budget, Connie hit the pavement—visiting local businesses to ask for support. The community responded with generosity, donating food, decorations, and door prizes. Key partners like Good Samaritan Society have played a huge role, contributing food, sound equipment, and bringing their residents to enjoy the event.

Attendance has grown year after year, with a large, enthusiastic crowd of older adults coming out to dance, laugh, and connect. For many, it’s their first prom experience—or their first chance in years to simply dance and celebrate. Connie regularly receives thank-you cards and heartfelt letters from attendees expressing how much the event means to them.
