Simplice Nguepnang, who was facing 11 felony charges including four counts related to human trafficking, saw a major shift in his case Thursday afternoon. Just before 4 p.m., the defense team requested that the human trafficking charges be dropped — a move the state agreed to without objection.

The case, being heard in Wapello County, continued with testimony from Ottumwa Police Department Investigator Jeremy Tosh. During his time on the stand, Tosh was asked about financial transactions related to the case. He said that more than $900 was transferred to an account, although details about the account were not shared in open court.

Tosh also faced questions about his investigative methods. Defense attorney Allen Cook pressed him about whether his line of questioning during interviews, particularly about the source of marijuana given to one of the alleged victims, was appropriate. Tosh defended his approach, saying he did not believe his questions were leading or improper.

The court also reviewed Snapchat messages and photographs showing the alleged victims at Nguepnang’s apartment. While these were presented for the jury to interpret, Cook argued that the evidence did not meet the threshold to support human trafficking charges.

Although those charges have now been dismissed, Nguepnang still faces serious allegations, including sexual abuse and distributing drugs to a minor.

The trial is set to continue on Friday, with closing arguments expected as the case nears its conclusion.
