The wildest race on wheels is about to take over downtown Des Moines!
On Saturday, May 31st, 2025, the legendary Red Bull Soapbox Race returns to the State Capitol Complex, and trust us—you don’t want to miss this one. Imagine a downhill race where the vehicles are homemade, the drivers wear costumes, and the course is lined with ramps, jumps, and pure chaos. It’s part engineering challenge, part comedy show, and 100% unforgettable.
What makes the Red Bull Soapbox Race so epic? It’s not just about speed—although some of these fearless racers are flying. Teams are also judged on creativity and showmanship, which means you’ll see soapbox cars shaped like giant tacos, rocket ships, unicorns, and probably at least one tribute to a cult movie.
Speaking of movies, keep an eye out for Cameron Niner and Brandon Pickney from Ottumwa. These hometown heroes are taking inspiration from Wreck-It Ralph with their “Sweet Racers Derby” car—and we hear it’s as colorful and candy-coated as the Sugar Rush race track from the film!
Admission is completely FREE. Bring the family, bring your friends, bring a lawn chair and park yourself along the Capitol Grounds for a full day of high-speed hilarity, live entertainment, food, and surprises.
In 2022, over 25,000 spectators showed up, and the event generated more than $1 million in economic impact for Des Moines. This year, they’re expecting an even bigger turnout. So whether you’re there for the speed, the laughs, or the outlandish outfits, this is the place to be.
Des Moines is the first U.S. stop on a three-city Soapbox showdown, followed by Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. That means Des Moines gets the honor of setting the bar—and the record—for the most outrageous builds and biggest thrills.
