Doy Edward Johnson, 82, of Douds, Iowa passed away on June 25, 2024 surrounded by his wife and family. He was born on July 28, 1941 in Canton, Missouri to Florence Prevo Johnson Rupe and his stepdad, Orville Rupe. On March 15, 1964 in Bloomfield, Iowa he married the love of his life, Mary Sickle. The couple enjoyed 60 years of marriage together.

Doy was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family. Above all, he was a coach, father to many besides his family, and a great friend to many that just needed someone to talk to. He worked many jobs before he found his lifelong job at John Deere Ottumwa Works where he met many great friends along the way. While working at John Deere, he painted many houses, the Bloomfield Water Tower and the Davis County Courthouse just to name a few. Taking care of his family was very important to Doy so he rarely turned down any painting jobs or extra work so he could provide.

Doy truly loved his family, friends and all the kids that he coached along the way in baseball and softball at Davis County. Doy and Mary established the little league softball program in Davis County. His love for fishing will be remembered by many. When he was not working, you could find him fishing with his friends, grandsons and his best friend, Brad Moore. He never knew a stanger and would always help his kids and family in any way possible.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Vicki (Tom) McDonough of Douds; two sons, Mike (Brenda) Johnson of Bloomfield, Todd (Susan) Johnson of Fairfield, Iowa; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Pam Townsend, Jane Ann Walker, infant Victoria; brother, Tommy Johnson Sr.; and a niece, Valerie Walker.

The family would like to give special thanks to Good Samaritan Society Hospice of Ottumwa. There were two special ladies that took care of him until his death, Lorri and Gia.

Doy’s wish was to be cremated. There will be a celebration of life on Sunday, July 28, 2024 (Which happens to be his birthday) at noon at the Riverbend Pizza and Steakhouse in Keosauqua, Iowa. There will be fish, fried chicken, coleslaw and cake to honor his favorite foods. A memorial has been established to his family and can be mailed to: Vicki McDonough, 14905 175th St., Douds, Iowa 52551 or to the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield.
