WYD Announces “Point in Time” Count

A local non-profit is asking for the public’s help to calculate how many individuals in the community are experiencing homelessness.

Whatsoever You Do says its “Point in Time” Count helps provide a snapshot of the number and characteristics of sheltered (staying at a friend’s place, hotel, hospital, jail, etc.) and unsheltered persons that are currently homeless in Wapello County.

The count will be held at two locations in Ottumwa starting at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 26th: Ottumwa YMCA (611 N. Hancock Street) and Blessings Soup Kitchen (228 E. Main Street).

Mary Margaret, CEO of Whatsoever You Do, says care bags will be available at the YMCA and individuals can take a shower as well. Additionally, meals will be served at both locations.

Margaret talked about the importance of the count.

“That’s [the count] to take like a snapshot of how many people are homeless in the area at that certain time,” Margaret explains. “When we get those figures, then we use those on grants so we can tell people how many people we have homeless.”

Participants in the count will also be given information and a coat.
