WATCH: Semi Carrying Cattle Involved in Rollover Accident

By Ellis Codjoe, August 16, 2019

Motorists traveling eastbound on Highway 34 Friday morning had to resort to driving on the shoulder after a semi truck carrying around 70 head of cattle rolled over.

Deputy Jeff Layton of the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office told Ottumwa Radio News that the driver of the semi was turning a corner, felt the load shift and overcorrected.

Emergency personnel estimate that four cows escaped the wreckage, one of which was seen in a clearing on the other side of the highway.

Layton says the driver was not injured and will be cited for failure to maintain control. Crews estimate that it will take most of the morning and maybe some of the afternoon to clear the debris, get the truck upright and round up the loose cows.
