Utilities Scam Reported in Southeast Iowa

By Jason Van Arkel, June 13, 2019

A new phone scam appears to be targeting utility customers in southeast Iowa.

The Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative says several of its members have received phone calls from someone claiming to work for MidAmerican Energy, and that they are working with CVEC. The caller is telling people that they need to pay a $500 deposit immediately for a meter upgrade, or their electric service will be disconnected.

CVEC stresses that they would never demand immediate payment over the phone. If anyone receives such a call, they should hang up immediately, then contact their local police of sheriff’s department. CVEC customers should also call their office, at 641-932-7126.
