(Ottumwa) – The United Way of Wapello County is kicking off another year at the Corporate Community Garden with a work day on Wednesday, April 16th. During the work day, volunteers will help clean the garden, set up new raised beds, and put down mulch to suppress weeds. Anyone is welcome to attend, regardless of their experience level. We encourage people to visit during the work day to get a tour of the garden and hear about the plans for the coming growing season. The volunteers will meet at 9:00 A.M. and continue until the work is done.
Started in 2013, the Corporate Community Garden successfully raised vegetables and donated them to the Lord’s Cupboard, Food Bank, and individuals in the community. The corporate garden will begin its second year this spring and will be expanding to include a neighborhood garden.
Last year, businesses in Wapello County have sponsored and cared for the raised beds at the Corporate Community Garden. This year, some companies have already expressed interest in participating again.
We are also making plots available for individuals who would like to grow food for their own use. We have a goal of starting a new neighborhood garden this year. This garden would focus on providing spaces in Ottumwa for individuals and families to grow food.
Anyone interested in participating in the work day or having a garden plot is encouraged to call the United Way of Wapello County office at 641-682-1264 for more information.
